It was with great sadness that we learned yesterday that Bill Morrison had died following a sudden illness, he was 71.
Bill was a playwright, a director, a producer, an actor, a screenwriter and the former Chair of the Writers’ Guild. He was a huge supporter of youth theatre and of theatre for children and young people in Liverpool.
As resident writer at the Liverpool Everyman from 1977 to 1979, along with Paul Harman and a group of passionate teachers, Bill was one of the founder members of Merseyside Young People’s Theatre. The company, that became better known as MYPT and later as Fuse, owes a great deal to Bill and his passion for theatre and for writing.
Bill was one of the Liverpool Playhouse’s celebrated Gang of Four alongside Alan Bleasdale, Willy Russell and Chris Bond in the early 1980’s, and perhaps best known for his play Flying Blind, a farce addressing the violence and sectarian divisions of Northern Ireland.
Bill will be much missed on Hope Street and by all those that knew him.
Our thoughts are very much with Ann and with his family.
